The Girl Who Heard the Clocks

The first time Eleanor Wren heard a clock scream, she was seven years old.

She remembered the day in fragments: the smell of rain on the pavement, the bitter taste of orange marmalade, and her grandmother standing in the doorway of the kitchen with a teacup trembling between her hands.

The clock had been an old grandfather clock, taller than Eleanor and twice as imposing, with dark walnut panels and a pendulum that swung like a slow, patient heartbeat.

It had stood in the hallway of her childhood home for as long as she could remember.

At precisely three minutes past four, it stopped ticking.

Then it screamed.

Not with a human voice. Not exactly. The sound was made of metal scraping against metal, a thousand tiny gears grinding in agony. Beneath it, Eleanor heard something else: a woman sobbing, a child calling for his mother, and the terrible, unmistakable sound of a door slamming shut.

Eleanor had clapped her hands over her ears.

Her grandmother had dropped the teacup.

And the clock had whispered a single word.

Run.

By the time Eleanor was eleven, she had learned that grown-ups preferred lies to explanations.

She stopped telling people that clocks spoke to her. She stopped asking why certain watches made her cry, or why the little brass clock above the fireplace always seemed to tick faster whenever her grandmother was frightened.

She learned to smile when people asked whether she was all right.

She learned to say she was tired.

Most importantly, she learned never to listen too closely after midnight.

For thirteen years, the clocks had remained mostly quiet.

Until the night the stranger arrived.

London in November was a city that seemed perpetually on the verge of remembering something dreadful.

Rain crawled down the windows of the old buildings in Bloomsbury, turning the streetlights into blurred golden halos. Buses groaned through puddles. Umbrellas bobbed along the pavements like dark mushrooms. Somewhere in the distance, a siren wailed and faded into the evening.

Eleanor stood behind the counter of her shop, polishing a silver pocket watch that had belonged to a dead man she had never met.

The shop was called Wren & Time.

Her grandmother had chosen the name, insisting that it was clever enough to attract customers and strange enough to keep the wrong ones away.

Eleanor had inherited the place two years earlier, along with three thousand clocks, a collection of unpaid invoices, and a set of handwritten instructions that made very little sense.

The most important instruction was pinned to the wall beside the register.

Never wind a clock that has no hands.

The second was written beneath it.

If the thirteenth bell rings, leave the shop immediately.

Eleanor had asked her grandmother about both instructions when she was a teenager.

Margaret Wren had looked at her over the rim of her spectacles.

"Some things," she had said, "are safer when they remain broken."

Then she had changed the subject.

Now Eleanor glanced at the clock above the counter. It was eight forty-seven.

She had been planning to close at eight, but a customer had called at the last minute about a repaired carriage clock, and she was still waiting for him to collect it. The customer had not appeared. The clock had.

It sat on the counter in a velvet-lined box, its polished brass face reflecting the warm light of the shop.

Eleanor turned it over in her hands.

The clock was ordinary in every way except one.

It had no hands.

Not broken hands. Not missing hands.

There were no holes in the center of its face, no evidence that hands had ever been attached. Its surface was smooth, pale ivory, marked only by twelve tiny black numbers.

She had found it in the back room that morning, beneath a pile of old ledgers. She did not remember seeing it before.

That alone was unusual.

Eleanor knew every object in her shop. She could identify a clock by the sound of its mechanism from the other side of the room. She knew which pieces had belonged to her grandmother, which had come from auctions, and which had been brought in by customers who told elaborate stories about their origins.

This clock had no record.

No price tag.

No maker's mark.

And when Eleanor touched its casing, she heard a whisper.

Not yet.

She set it down.

"Fine," she muttered. "Be mysterious."

A gust of wind rattled the front window.

The clocks around her continued their steady chorus.

Tick. Tick. Tick.

The old carriage clock chimed the quarter hour.

Somewhere in the back room, a watch began ticking backward.

Eleanor froze.

She knew that sound.

It was the sound of a memory trying to return.

She had heard it only twice before: once when she was eleven, shortly before her grandmother took her out of school for a week without explanation, and once on the day Margaret died.

The ticking grew louder.

Eleanor stepped away from the counter.

"No," she whispered.

The watch stopped.

For a moment, every clock in the shop fell silent.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Three times.

Eleanor turned toward the entrance.

Through the rain-streaked glass, she saw a man standing beneath the narrow awning.

He was tall and dressed in a dark coat that looked expensive without being fashionable. Rain had soaked his black hair, and his face was pale in the streetlight. One hand rested against the window frame.

The other held a pocket watch.

Even through the glass, Eleanor could see that it was old.

Very old.

The man lifted his head.

Their eyes met.

And every clock in the shop stopped.

Eleanor stared at the silent clocks.

Then she stared at the man.

"Absolutely not," she said.

The man knocked again.

Eleanor considered pretending she had gone home. It was a perfectly reasonable option. She could turn off the lights, slip out through the back entrance, and let the stranger stand in the rain until he decided to try a less alarming shop.

Instead, she found herself unlocking the door.

Perhaps it was curiosity.

Perhaps it was the expression on his face.

He looked less like someone seeking help and more like someone who had been searching for a particular door for a very long time.

When Eleanor opened it, the cold air rushed inside.

"You're closed," she said.

"I know."

"Then you must be lost."

"I was hoping you might be able to help me."

"With directions?"

He glanced at the clocks behind her.

"With something a little more complicated."

Eleanor folded her arms.

"That usually means expensive."

For the first time, the stranger smiled.

It was a small smile, unexpectedly warm, and it changed his face in a way she found deeply inconvenient.

"I can pay."

"That usually means trouble."

"Then we're both fortunate that I have plenty of money."

He stepped beneath the light.

Eleanor noticed three things immediately.

His eyes were an unusual shade of gray, almost silver around the edges. A thin scar crossed the base of his left thumb. And his coat was completely dry.

She looked down at the rainwater shining on the pavement behind him.

Then back at his shoulders.

"How did you do that?"

"Do what?"

"Stay dry."

He looked at his coat as though he had only just noticed it.

"Good tailoring."

"Of course."

He offered her the pocket watch.

"I need you to repair this."

Eleanor did not take it.

"What's wrong with it?"

"It's stopped."

"Most watches do eventually."

"This one shouldn't have."

Something in his voice made the words sound less like an explanation and more like a warning.

Eleanor reluctantly accepted the watch.

It was heavier than it looked, made of dark silver with a thin chain and an intricate engraving on the back. Its face was black, its numerals written in delicate white script.

The hands were fixed at twelve minutes past midnight.

Beneath the glass, a faint blue light pulsed like a heartbeat.

Eleanor's fingers tightened around it.

She knew that light.

She had seen it once before, reflected in the eyes of her grandmother on the night she died.

The stranger watched her carefully.

"Do you recognize it?"

"No."

The lie came too quickly.

His expression changed.

"You're a terrible liar, Eleanor."

Her head snapped up.

"How do you know my name?"

He did not answer.

Instead, he turned the watch over and pointed to the engraving.

Eleanor looked down.

Three words had been carved into the silver in a fine, elegant hand.

For Eleanor, always.

The shop seemed to tilt around her.

She ran her thumb across the letters.

The engraving was old. The metal had darkened around the edges, and the lettering had been worn smooth by years of handling.

Someone had given this watch to her.

Someone who knew her name.

Someone she had never met.

"Who are you?" she demanded.

The man hesitated.

For a fraction of a second, his expression held something that looked remarkably like grief.

"Lucien."

"Lucien what?"

"Vale."

"Well, Mr. Vale, I don't know how you got hold of this watch, but I can tell you that I've never seen it before."

"I know."

"And I don't know you."

"I know that, too."

"Then perhaps you can explain why you're standing in my shop at nearly nine o'clock on a rainy Thursday night, holding an antique watch engraved with my name."

Lucien looked at her for a long moment.

"Because," he said quietly, "you promised me you would remember."

The words struck her harder than they should have.

For an instant, the shop disappeared.

She saw moonlight spilling over black water. A stone bridge covered in frost. A man's hand reaching for hers.

And a voice, close to her ear, whispering through the darkness.

If you forget me, I will find you.

Eleanor staggered backward.

The vision vanished.

The shop returned.

The clocks remained silent.

Lucien moved toward her, but stopped when she raised a hand.

"Don't."

He obeyed immediately.

Something about that frightened her more than if he had ignored her.

"How did you do that?" she whispered.

"Do what?"

"Show me—"

She stopped.

She had no words for the memory. It had felt more real than anything she had experienced that day, and yet she could not tell whether it belonged to her.

Lucien's face had gone pale.

"You saw it."

"Saw what?"

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, the grief was gone, replaced by something harder.

"Nothing. Forget it."

"That's an interesting request from someone who just accused me of forgetting him."

"I didn't mean to frighten you."

"Congratulations. You failed."

Despite everything, his mouth twitched.

"You always did have a temper."

Eleanor stared at him.

"Always?"

He looked away.

"Forget I said that."

"You're going to have to do better than that if you want your watch repaired."

"I don't want it repaired."

She glanced at the watch in her hand.

"Then why bring it here?"

"Because it brought me here."

Before she could respond, the pocket watch began to vibrate.

The blue light beneath its glass brightened.

A low hum filled the room.

Eleanor felt it in her bones.

The hands moved.

One minute backward.

Then another.

Then the entire watch face began to turn, the numerals shifting like reflections on water.

Lucien stepped forward.

"Eleanor, listen to me very carefully."

"What's happening?"

"Whatever you do, don't let it strike thirteen."

The watch chimed.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Eleanor dropped it.

The watch did not hit the floor.

It hung in the air between them, suspended as if held by invisible fingers.

Four chimes.

Five.

Every clock in the shop began ticking backward.

The lights flickered.

Outside, a bus rolled past the window in reverse, its red taillights moving backward through the rain. A woman walking a dog retraced her steps without seeming to notice. Raindrops lifted from the pavement and rose into the dark sky.

Eleanor could not breathe.

"Lucien!"

"I know."

"What is this?"

"Time remembering."

The watch chimed again.

Six.

Seven.

Eight.

Lucien reached for her hand.

She should have pulled away.

She did not.

The instant his fingers touched hers, every sound vanished.

The watch stopped moving.

The rain froze outside the window, each droplet suspended in the air.

The clocks fell silent.

And Eleanor heard something inside Lucien that made her heart ache.

Not a voice.

Not a memory.

A heartbeat.

It was slow, steady, and strangely familiar, as if she had spent years listening to it in the dark.

She looked at him.

His eyes had widened.

"You can hear me," he whispered.

"Hear what?"

"My heart."

She swallowed.

"Everyone has a heart."

"Not mine."

For the first time since he had entered the shop, Lucien looked genuinely afraid.

He pulled his hand away.

The world lurched.

Rain struck the pavement. The bus continued down the street. The clocks resumed their ordinary ticking.

The watch fell.

Lucien caught it before it reached the floor.

He stared at Eleanor as though she had just done something impossible.

"What are you?" she whispered.

He gave a short, humorless laugh.

"I was going to ask you the same thing."

They sat across from each other at the workbench.

Eleanor had locked the front door and drawn the curtains. She had also placed a small hammer within reach, which Lucien seemed to find amusing.

"I wouldn't recommend that," he said.

"Wouldn't recommend what?"

"Trying to hit me with a hammer."

"I wasn't planning to."

"You moved it closer to your right hand."

Eleanor slowly moved the hammer to her left.

Lucien smiled.

She hated that she noticed how nice his smile was.

"Start talking," she said.

He turned the pocket watch over in his hands.

"Thirteen years ago, you and I made a promise."

"I was eleven thirteen years ago."

"I know."

"How old were you?"

"Old enough to know better."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's the only one I have."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"Did we know each other when I was a child?"

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Here."

She frowned.

"This shop has been in my family for generations."

"I know."

"My grandmother owned it."

"I know."

"And you're telling me that you knew me when I was eleven, but you haven't aged?"

Lucien's expression softened.

"I have aged. Just not in the way you mean."

Eleanor stood.

"Wonderful. You're either a lunatic or a very committed criminal."

"Neither."

"Then tell me the truth."

He looked down at the watch.

For a moment, the only sound in the room was the rain against the windows.

"When you were eleven, something happened in London," he said. "Something that should have destroyed this city. You stopped it."

Eleanor felt a chill.

"How?"

"You broke the clock."

"What clock?"

"The one that measures the time between worlds."

She almost laughed.

Almost.

But the expression on his face stopped her.

"You're serious."

"Unfortunately."

"And what does that have to do with me?"

Lucien lifted his eyes to hers.

"Everything."

He placed the watch on the workbench and opened its case.

Inside the lid was a tiny photograph.

It was faded, its edges yellowed with age, but the image remained clear enough to recognize.

A girl stood beneath a moonlit sky, wearing a white dress and a ribbon in her dark hair. She looked about eleven. Beside her stood a young man with silver-gray eyes.

Lucien.

His arm was wrapped around the girl's shoulders.

She was smiling at him.

Not politely.

Not uncertainly.

She was smiling as though he were the safest place in the world.

Eleanor's throat tightened.

The girl in the photograph was her.

She knew it as surely as she knew her own reflection.

But the dress, the moonlight, and the expression on her face belonged to a life she could not remember.

Beneath the photograph, written in the same delicate script as the engraving, was a sentence.

When the thirteenth hour returns, find me before I find you.

Eleanor looked up.

Lucien was watching her.

"Who took this photograph?" she asked.

"You did."

"That's impossible."

"You were very good with old cameras."

"I mean, I don't remember this."

"I know."

"Why don't I remember this?"

His face tightened.

"Because you asked me to make you forget."

The room seemed to grow colder.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because I was going to die."

Eleanor could not speak.

Lucien continued, his voice low.

"You found a way to stop it. But the spell required a sacrifice. You could save my life, or you could keep your memories of me. You couldn't have both."

"And I chose to forget you?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at her with an expression so full of tenderness that she wanted to turn away.

"Because you loved me."

The words settled between them.

Eleanor had spent years believing that love was something simple. A feeling, perhaps, or a choice. Something that happened gradually, through shared meals and familiar jokes and the quiet accumulation of ordinary days.

She had never believed that a person could look at a stranger and feel the shape of a missing life inside her chest.

Yet that was precisely what was happening.

She did not know Lucien Vale.

She did not trust him.

She had every reason to believe he was lying.

And still, some buried part of her wanted to reach across the workbench and take his hand.

"Why have you come back now?" she asked.

Lucien closed the watch.

"Because the spell is failing."

"What happens when it fails?"

He hesitated.

Outside, the church bells began to ring nine o'clock.

One.

Two.

Three.

Eleanor watched Lucien's face.

Four.

Five.

Six.

He looked as though he were listening to something far away.

Seven.

Eight.

Nine.

The bells stopped.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then, from somewhere deep beneath the shop, a single bell rang.

Eleanor felt the sound in her teeth.

Lucien went rigid.

"No," he whispered.

The bell rang again.

A second time.

The grandfather clock in the corner shuddered. Its pendulum stopped swinging. The clock face darkened, and a thin line appeared across the glass.

Eleanor rose slowly from her chair.

"What's happening?"

Lucien was already moving toward the door.

"We have to leave."

"Why?"

"Because the thirteenth hour has begun."

A third bell rang.

The clock face cracked.

Behind the glass, where the hands should have been, Eleanor saw a pair of silver eyes staring back at her.

Her own eyes.

She stumbled away.

The grandfather clock opened its mouth.

And in her grandmother's voice, it whispered:

"Don't trust the man you love."

The clock exploded.

Eleanor woke on the floor.

For several seconds, she could not remember where she was. Dust floated through the air. Splinters of dark wood lay scattered across the carpet. Somewhere nearby, a clock ticked steadily, as if nothing unusual had happened.

Her head hurt.

Her hands were shaking.

Lucien knelt beside her.

"Eleanor?"

She stared at him.

"Don't touch me."

He withdrew his hand.

"Are you hurt?"

"What was that?"

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me."

"I'm not."

She tried to stand, but her knees gave way. Lucien caught her before she fell.

This time, she did not pull away.

For a moment, she was aware only of the warmth of his hands, the rain-scented air around him, and the strange, aching familiarity of his presence.

Then she noticed the blood on his sleeve.

"You're hurt."

"It's nothing."

"You're bleeding."

He glanced down.

A thin red line ran from his wrist to his elbow.

Eleanor reached for him before she could stop herself.

The moment her fingers touched the wound, a memory flashed through her mind.

A different room.

A different night.

Lucien lying on the floor, his face pale, his fingers wrapped around hers.

Blood on his shirt.

A clock counting backward.

And Eleanor's own voice, breaking as she whispered:

I will find you. Even if the world forgets your name.

She jerked her hand away.

Lucien looked at her.

"You remembered something."

"No."

"Eleanor—"

"I said no."

She stumbled toward the workbench.

The pocket watch lay where Lucien had left it. Its silver casing was warm, and the blue light beneath the glass had faded to a faint glow.

Beside it was a small brass key.

Eleanor was certain it had not been there before.

She picked it up.

A line of tiny letters had been engraved along its shaft.

For the girl who remembers tomorrow.

Beneath the key lay a folded piece of paper.

Eleanor opened it.

The handwriting was unmistakable.

It belonged to her grandmother.

My dearest Eleanor,

If you are reading this, the clock has begun again.

I am sorry.

There are things I should have told you when you were young. Things I thought I could protect you from by keeping them secret.

I was wrong.

The man standing beside you is not your enemy, but he is not the person you remember him to be.

Do not let him take you to the tower.

Do not open the thirteenth door.

And whatever happens, do not let him tell you how your story ends.

Eleanor read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

When she looked up, Lucien was standing by the window, staring at the dark street beyond it.

"What's the tower?" she asked.

He did not turn around.

"The place where time began."

"And the thirteenth door?"

His shoulders stiffened.

"The place where it ends."

Eleanor folded the letter.

"You know what my grandmother was talking about."

"Yes."

"And you know why she warned me about you."

Lucien finally turned.

His face looked older than it had an hour ago. Not physically, but in the way a person looks when they have carried the same grief for too long.

"Yes."

She waited.

He said nothing.

"Then tell me."

"I can't."

"Can't or won't?"

"Both."

Eleanor laughed, but there was no humor in it.

"You arrive at my shop with an impossible watch, tell me that we were in love when I was a child, and blow up my grandfather clock. Now my dead grandmother is writing me letters from beyond the grave, and you expect me to simply accept that you can't explain any of it?"

"When you put it like that, it sounds unreasonable."

"It is unreasonable."

"I know."

"You're infuriating."

"I know that, too."

She stared at him.

Then, against her better judgment, she laughed.

It was a small sound, startled and disbelieving, but it broke the tension in the room.

Lucien looked at her as though he had been given something precious.

For one brief moment, Eleanor saw the man from the photograph: the boy with the silver eyes who had stood beside her beneath a moonlit sky, trusting her with a secret neither of them had survived.

Then the expression vanished.

Lucien stepped back.

"You need to leave London," he said.

"Excuse me?"

"Tonight. Take a train north. Don't tell anyone where you're going. Don't use your phone. Don't open any doors you don't recognize."

"That sounds suspiciously like the beginning of a kidnapping."

"It's the beginning of a warning."

"And what about you?"

"I'll stay here."

"Why?"

"Because whatever is coming will be looking for me."

Eleanor glanced at the ruined grandfather clock.

"Then perhaps you should go somewhere else."

"I tried that."

"What happened?"

He looked at her.

"Every road brought me back to you."

For a moment, she had no answer.

Outside, the rain began to fall harder.

Eleanor looked down at the key in her hand. It was warm, almost hot, and she could feel a faint vibration running through the metal.

She knew what she should do.

She should call the police.

She should throw Lucien out of her shop.

She should forget the impossible photograph, the broken clock, and the voice that had spoken in her grandmother's words.

Instead, she placed the key in her pocket.

Then she picked up the watch.

"I have a question," she said.

Lucien waited.

"If we were in love, why do I feel as though I've been waiting for you?"

His expression changed.

Something in his eyes broke.

He looked at her for a long time before answering.

"Because you have."

The clocks began ticking backward again.

Not all of them.

Only one.

The small brass clock above the fireplace.

Its hands moved slowly, passing nine o'clock, eight o'clock, seven.

Then six.

Then five.

Then four.

Eleanor stared at it.

The hands stopped at three minutes past four.

The time the grandfather clock had screamed when she was seven years old.

A whisper drifted through the shop.

Not from the clock.

From the walls.

From the floor.

From the space between one heartbeat and the next.

Find the first memory.

Lucien went pale.

Eleanor turned toward him.

"What does that mean?"

He shook his head.

But she could see that he knew.

"Lucien."

He closed his eyes.

"The first memory is the one thing we cannot afford to find."

"Why?"

When he opened his eyes, there was fear in them.

"Because if you remember how we met, Eleanor, you'll remember who killed me."

The pocket watch chimed.

Once.

A thin crack appeared across its silver face.

And from somewhere far beneath the streets of London, something answered.

A bell.

Then another.

Then eleven more.

The thirteenth hour had begun.

CHAPTER TWO

Eleanor had always believed that London was a city full of secrets.

Old buildings hid forgotten rooms. Narrow streets disappeared into alleys that seemed too small to exist. Beneath the crowded pavements, ancient tunnels carried whispers from centuries long gone.

But until that night, she had never believed that the city itself could forget someone.

Lucien stood beside the broken grandfather clock, staring at the pocket watch in his hand.

The silver casing had cracked, and the blue light inside it flickered like a dying star.

Eleanor watched him carefully.

“Who killed you?” she asked.

Lucien looked up.

“That's not the question you should be asking.”

“I'm beginning to think there isn't a single question you want to answer.”

“I'm trying to protect you.”

“People who say that usually have something to hide.”

A faint smile crossed his face.

“You used to say that.”

“And you used to know me, apparently.”

The smile disappeared.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then the bell beneath the city rang again.

Eleanor felt the vibration travel through the floorboards.

Lucien immediately moved toward the shop entrance.

“We have to leave.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere the clocks cannot hear us.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“Clocks have ears now?”

“Not exactly.”

“Wonderful. That makes everything much less terrifying.”

He opened the door.

Cold rain swept into the shop.

Outside, the street was almost empty. The lamps cast pale circles across the wet pavement, and a black taxi waited at the corner with its headlights switched off.

Lucien frowned.

“Stay behind me.”

“I'm not a child.”

“No,” he said quietly. “You're much more dangerous than that.”

Before Eleanor could demand an explanation, a figure appeared beneath the streetlamp.

It was an old woman wearing a long gray coat and carrying a red umbrella.

She stood perfectly still.

Her face was hidden beneath the shadow of her hat.

Lucien stopped breathing.

The woman raised her head.

“Lucien Vale,” she called.

Her voice sounded thin and distant, as though it had travelled through a long tunnel.

“You have been gone for a very long time.”

Lucien stepped in front of Eleanor.

“Keep walking,” he whispered.

The woman smiled.

“I see you brought her back.”

Eleanor felt a cold shiver run down her spine.

“Who is she?” she whispered.

Lucien did not answer.

The woman closed her umbrella.

Every streetlamp on the road went dark.

Eleanor heard the clocks inside the shop begin to scream.

Lucien grabbed her hand.

“Run!”

They raced into the rain.

Eleanor's shoes slipped on the pavement as they turned into a narrow alley between two old brick buildings.

Behind them, footsteps followed.

Slow.

Steady.

Unhurried.

The woman was not running.

She did not need to.

Eleanor glanced over her shoulder.

The alley was empty.

Then a voice whispered directly beside her ear.

“You should have stayed forgotten, little Wren.”

Eleanor stumbled.

Lucien caught her and pulled her forward.

At the end of the alley stood a black iron gate that Eleanor had never seen before.

Beyond it was a small courtyard filled with dead ivy and broken stone statues.

Lucien pressed his palm against the gate.

A silver symbol appeared beneath his fingers.

The lock clicked open.

They slipped inside.

The gate slammed shut behind them.

For several seconds, Eleanor could hear nothing but her own breathing.

Then she noticed the courtyard's strange stillness.

The rain stopped at the gate.

Every droplet hung in the air beyond the iron bars.

The city continued moving outside, but inside the courtyard, time seemed to have paused.

Eleanor slowly turned toward Lucien.

“Explain.”

He leaned against the wall, breathing hard.

“That woman is a collector.”

“A collector of what?”

“People who remember things they shouldn't.”

“And what does she want with me?”

Lucien looked at her.

“She wants the memory you buried.”

Eleanor thought of her grandmother's letter.

Do not let him take you to the tower.

Do not open the thirteenth door.

And whatever happens, do not let him tell you how your story ends.

“Where is the tower?” she asked.

Lucien's expression hardened.

“We aren't going there.”

“Then where are we going?”

“To a place where I can show you the truth without getting you killed.”

“That's reassuring.”

“I wasn't trying to reassure you.”

“Clearly.”

Despite the danger, Eleanor found herself studying his face.

There was something strange about him.

He looked young, but his eyes carried a sadness that seemed impossibly old. His clothes were modern, his voice was warm, and his hands trembled whenever the bells rang.

Yet when he looked at her, he seemed to be seeing someone who no longer existed.

“Lucien,” she said softly.

He turned.

“Did you really love me?”

The question seemed to strike him harder than any accusation.

“Yes.”

“How much?”

He looked away.

“Enough to spend thirteen years searching for you.”

Eleanor's heart tightened.

“Where were you searching?”

“Everywhere.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only one I can give you.”

She stepped closer.

“Were you happy with me?”

Lucien closed his eyes.

For a moment, he seemed unable to speak.

Then he whispered, “You were the only happiness I ever knew.”

Eleanor looked down at their hands.

She had not realized he was still holding hers.

Neither of them moved.

Then the pocket watch began to tick.

Lucien immediately released her.

“No.”

The ticking grew louder.

Eleanor looked at the watch.

The cracked glass had begun to repair itself, the tiny fractures disappearing one by one.

A new image appeared beneath the face.

A photograph.

This one showed a woman standing in front of a clocktower.

She had long dark hair, pale skin, and Eleanor's eyes.

But she was older.

Much older.

The woman held a newborn child in her arms.

Lucien stared at the photograph with an expression Eleanor could not understand.

“Who is that?” Eleanor asked.

He took the watch from her.

“Someone you must never become.”

Before she could question him, the photograph changed.

The woman disappeared.

In her place stood Eleanor herself.

She was wearing a black dress.

Her hands were covered in blood.

And behind her, London was burning.

Eleanor dropped the watch.

It struck the stone floor.

The courtyard shook.

Somewhere beyond the gate, the old woman laughed.

Lucien seized Eleanor's shoulders.

“Listen to me. Whatever you see in that watch, whatever memories return, you must never believe that you know how this story ends.”

Eleanor stared at him.

“Why?”

He looked at her with terrible sadness.

“Because I have seen the ending.”

“And?”

His voice broke.

“You kill me.”

The courtyard fell silent.

For a long moment, Eleanor could not move.

Then she heard a small sound behind them.

A door opening.

Lucien turned sharply.

At the far end of the courtyard stood a narrow wooden door set into a wall of ancient stone.

Eleanor was certain it had not been there before.

Above the door, a brass plaque bore a single inscription.

THE HOUSE OF FORGOTTEN HOURS

Lucien reached for her hand.

“Whatever happens,” he whispered, “don't let go of me.”

Eleanor looked at the door.

Then at the man who claimed she had once loved him.

She did not know whether he was telling the truth.

She did not know whether he was protecting her or leading her into a trap.

But when the door opened by itself, revealing a staircase descending into darkness, she followed him inside.

Behind them, the courtyard vanished.

And somewhere in the rain-soaked streets of London, every clock struck midnight at once.

Even though it was only nine o'clock.

End of Chapter 2

CHAPTER THREE

The staircase seemed to stretch endlessly beneath the streets of London.

Eleanor followed Lucien down the narrow steps, one hand gripping the iron railing and the other clutching the brass key she had found beside her grandmother's letter.

The air grew colder with every step.

The walls were covered in strange markings, symbols carved into the stone so deeply that they looked like scars.

Some resembled numbers.

Others looked like letters from an alphabet Eleanor had never seen.

At the bottom of the staircase, a golden light flickered in the darkness.

Lucien stopped.

“Before we go inside, there are three things you need to understand.”

Eleanor sighed.

“Only three? We're making progress.”

He glanced at her.

“First, never give your full name to anyone inside that shop.”

“Why?”

“Names are valuable here.”

“Of course they are.”

“Second, don't touch anything that belongs to someone else.”

“What happens if I do?”

“Sometimes nothing.”

“And the other times?”

“You might inherit their memories.”

Eleanor looked at her hands.

“And the third?”

Lucien's expression became serious.

“If you see someone you recognize, don't assume you've met them before.”

She stared at him.

“That makes absolutely no sense.”

“It will.”

He pushed open the door.

A bell rang above their heads.

Eleanor stepped into a shop that seemed larger than the entire street above it.

Shelves stretched toward a ceiling lost in darkness. Thousands of glass bottles glowed in shades of blue, gold, and violet. Silver watches hung from the walls, their hands spinning at different speeds.

At the center of the room stood a long counter made of black marble.

Behind it sat a young woman with white hair and golden eyes.

She was reading a newspaper dated November 17, 1894.

Without looking up, she said, “You're late, Lucien.”

“I had a complication.”

“You always have a complication.”

Her gaze shifted to Eleanor.

For several seconds, she stared without blinking.

Then she slowly stood.

“Oh,” she whispered.

Lucien stiffened.

“What?”

The woman came around the counter.

Her golden eyes filled with tears.

“You brought her back.”

Eleanor stepped away.

“Everyone keeps saying that. Back from where?”

The woman reached toward Eleanor's face.

Lucien caught her wrist.

“Don't.”

The woman looked at him.

“You cannot keep doing this to her.”

“Not here.”

“Where, then? In another thirteen years? After another city burns?”

“Enough.”

The word struck the room like a thunderclap.

Every bottle on the shelves trembled.

The woman lowered her hand.

Then she looked at Eleanor again.

“My name is Isolde,” she said. “And I knew you before you forgot how to be yourself.”

Eleanor swallowed.

“Was I a difficult person?”

Isolde gave a sad little smile.

“You were extraordinary.”

“That sounds suspiciously like something people say when they don't want to mention your terrible habits.”

“You hated being told what to do. You cheated at cards. You stole books from people who annoyed you, and you once threatened to destroy the moon because Lucien refused to dance with you.”

Eleanor stared at Lucien.

He looked at the ceiling.

“You threatened the moon?” she asked.

“It was a complicated evening.”

“Did it work?”

“No.”

“Shame.”

Isolde laughed softly.

For one brief moment, the shop felt warm.

Then her expression changed.

She looked toward the staircase.

“She's coming.”

Lucien swore under his breath.

“The collector?”

Isolde nodded.

“She has already crossed the boundary.”

“Then open the eastern passage.”

“I can't.”

“Why not?”

“Because someone has stolen the key.”

Eleanor felt the brass key in her pocket grow warm.

She slowly took it out.

Isolde's eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was beside a letter from my grandmother.”

The white-haired woman stared at the key.

Then she bowed her head.

“Your grandmother was a remarkable woman.”

“You knew her, too?”

“Everyone who matters knew Margaret Wren.”

A crash sounded from the staircase.

The shop door slammed open.

A cold wind swept through the room.

The old woman with the red umbrella stood at the top of the steps.

Her face was no longer hidden beneath her hat.

She looked exactly like Eleanor.

The same dark hair.

The same eyes.

The same small scar above the left eyebrow.

But her skin was pale as paper, and a thin silver line ran from her forehead to her chin.

Eleanor could not breathe.

The woman smiled.

“Hello, little me.”

Lucien stepped in front of Eleanor.

“Get back.”

The woman tilted her head.

“You still play the hero.”

“And you still mistake cruelty for intelligence.”

“Perhaps.” Her smile widened. “But at least I remember what you did.”

She raised one hand.

Every bottle in the shop shattered.

Thousands of voices burst into the air.

Children laughing.

Women crying.

Men shouting names that had been forgotten for centuries.

Eleanor clapped her hands over her ears.

The woman walked slowly down the staircase.

“Come with me, Eleanor.”

“No.”

“You don't even know what you're refusing.”

“I know enough.”

The woman's expression softened.

For the first time, Eleanor saw something familiar in her face.

Fear.

“I know what he tells you,” the woman whispered. “I know how he looks at you. I know how he makes you believe that love can repair everything.”

She glanced at Lucien.

“He has told you about the clock, hasn't he?”

Eleanor said nothing.

“The missing hour. The broken spell. The tower.”

The woman stepped closer.

“But he hasn't told you why he needed you to forget.”

Lucien's jaw tightened.

“Don't listen to her.”

The woman laughed.

“Of course. Because the truth is inconvenient.”

She reached into her coat and removed a small silver photograph.

Eleanor recognized the image immediately.

It was the photograph from the pocket watch.

The younger Eleanor stood beside Lucien beneath a moonlit sky.

But this version contained something different.

Behind them, barely visible in the darkness, stood the woman with the red umbrella.

And her hand rested on Lucien's shoulder.

Eleanor stared at the photograph.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked directly into her eyes.

“I am the part of you that remembers.”

Then she smiled.

“And I am the reason he is still alive.”

The floor beneath Eleanor's feet began to crack.

Lucien reached for her.

The woman lifted her hand.

And the entire shop disappeared.
